In the decades following China’s adoption of the SKS as the “Type 56” carbine, Chinese manufacturers expanded production to include commercial export variants for civilian markets. Among the most distinctive of these was the Norinco SKS-M, a factory-produced model engineered to accept standard AK-47/AKM-pattern detachable box magazines in place of the traditional fixed 10-round internal magazine integral to the original SKS design. Imported into the United States primarily during the late 1980s and early 1990s, prior to federal import restrictions that curtailed further shipments, the SKS-M was configured with a shortened 16 1/2-inch barrel—commonly described in the commercial market as “paratrooper-style”—resulting in an overall length of approximately 37 to 38 inches and an unloaded weight of roughly eight pounds, depending on stock configuration. Chambered in 7.62x39mm, the rifle retained the SKS platform’s established gas-operated, tilting-bolt action, along with its hooded front sight and adjustable tangent rear sight assembly. To accommodate detachable magazines, the receiver, magazine well, and stock were factory-machined accordingly, distinguishing the model from standard Type 56 carbines.
