Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ordnance Tech SSP-91 — better known to many shooters as the Magnum Research “Lone Eagle” after Magnum Research acquired the design and marketing rights in the early 1990s — is a compact, single-shot, rotary-breech pistol developed specifically to fire full-power rifle cartridges from a handgun platform. Its lineage began with John P. Foote’s SSP-86 work at Ordnance Technology, which evolved into the improved SSP-91 by about 1991; Magnum Research then bought the design and sold it as the Lone Eagle while Ordnance Tech initially continued limited manufacture. What sets the SSP-91/Lone Eagle apart mechanically is its cannon (rotary) breech: a short, strong rotating breechblock that locks like a miniature naval cannon and provides a rigid, repeatable lockup capable of handling high-pressure rifle rounds. Because the action is so compact and inherently strong, designers were able to offer the pistol in an unusually broad slate of chamberings — everything from .22 Hornet and .22–250 up through .308 Winchester, .30–06, and even magnum straight-wall cartridges — and to do so with a much shorter overall package than bolt-action or break-action single-shot handguns. On the range, the Lone Eagle/SSP-91 earned a reputation for excellent inherent accuracy and a stout, unmistakable recoil impulse: its rigid breech and short barrel deliver repeatable grouping performance, but in heavy rifle calibers, the muzzle blast and recoil are significant and demand a steady hold (and often a heavy or braced stock) for best results. The manual nature of the action — the shooter cocks the firing mechanism separately and operates the rotary breech knob to open/close the action — makes it safe to carry with a chambered round and also gives the pistol a deliberate, competition-oriented manual of arms that silhouette shooters and handgun hunters appreciated. Compared with contemporaries such as the Thompson/Center Contender or the Remington XP-100, the Lone Eagle’s cannon breech provides a shorter, stiffer lockup (and thus the potential for finer accuracy), but at the cost of relatively limited aftermarket support and a scarcity of parts and spare barreled actions today. As a result, the SSP-91/Lone Eagle occupies a distinctive niche: prized by collectors and niche hunters for its clever engineering, accuracy potential, and rarity, yet less practical for shooters who want modular caliber swapping, light weight, or plentiful factory support — factors reflected in the pistol’s modest but steady presence on the used market.
