Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Introduced to the American market in late 1988 and imported until the March 14, 1989, federal import ban, the AK-47/S Legend from Poly Technologies quickly established itself as one of the most desirable pre-ban semi-automatic Kalashnikov variants available in the United States. Manufactured in China at State Arsenal Factory 386 in Longyan, Fujian Province — a government-run small-arms facility identified by its distinctive oval “386” stamp — the Legend reflects the export-focused production of Chinese military-pattern rifles during the late Cold War period. Factory 386 was one of the designated state arsenals responsible for Kalashnikov-type rifle production, with numerical codes commonly used in place of commercial branding. Chambered in 7.62x39mm, the rifle features a 16 3/8-inch cold hammer-forged barrel with a chrome-lined bore and chamber, an overall weight of approximately 8.2 pounds unloaded, and a true milled steel receiver machined from a forged billet requiring over 110 individual machining operations. Patterned closely after the classic milled AK-47 Type 3 design and derived from Chinese Type 56 production heritage, the Legend offers exceptional rigidity and durability compared to stamped-receiver alternatives.

Additional features include a hard-chromed gas piston for corrosion resistance and a traditional double-hook trigger mechanism designed for reliable function and improved engagement. Imported through Keng’s Firearms Specialty prior to the 1989 ban, the Legend was offered in multiple configurations, including fixed-stock and underfolding variants, and was furnished with an original pattern bayonet. Today, it remains a standout example of late-1980s Chinese AK craftsmanship and a highly regarded model among collectors of pre-ban military-pattern rifles.
