Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The M1898 Rast & Gasser revolver, the last and final iteration in a series of Gasser-designed handguns, served as the standard sidearm of the Austro-Hungarian Army from 1898 to 1918, including throughout World War I, despite the adoption of the Steyr M1912 semi-automatic pistol. Manufactured by Leopold Gasser Waffenfabrik in Vienna, approximately 200,000 units were produced. Chambered for the 8mm Gasser cartridge, it featured a robust, solid-frame design and an 8-round cylinder, giving it equal or greater capacity than many semi-automatic pistols of the era. Often underappreciated, the M1898 was notable for its high standard of manufacturing and practical innovations, including the Abadie system, which disconnected the hammer from the trigger when the loading gate was opened, allowing faster reloading, and a hinged sideplate providing easy access to internal components for maintenance.

Issued primarily to officers, NCOs, and machine gunners, its reliability under harsh conditions ensured continued use even when plans to replace it with the Roth-Steyr M1907 and Steyr M1912 were underway but limited by production shortages. After World War I, the M1898 remained in service in countries such as Italy and Yugoslavia, and was even used during the Polish-Soviet War. Eventually phased out in favor of more modern semi-automatic pistols, it remains a historically significant firearm prized by collectors and enthusiasts, particularly for its role in World War I and its distinctive 8-round cylinder design.
