Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 1100, introduced in 1963 by Remington Arms, revolutionized the shotgun market by combining semi-automatic fire with a reliable gas-operated action, setting a new benchmark for smooth shooting and reduced recoil. Unlike traditional long-recoil operated designs, the Model 1100 vents propellant gases through ports in the barrel near the fore end to drive a steel action sleeve that surrounds the magazine tube and connects to the bolt carrier. When fired, this system cycles the bolt rearward to extract and eject the spent shell while releasing a fresh round from the magazine; an action spring housed in the buttstock then returns the bolt forward, chambering the next shell smoothly and consistently. This gas system significantly reduces felt recoil compared with recoil-operated designs and contributed to the Model 1100’s widespread popularity among field, skeet, and trap shooters.

In 1966, Remington expanded the lineup with the Model 1100 Deer Gun, a factory variant specifically configured for deer hunting in shotgun-only regions. The original 1966 Deer Gun was a 12-gauge autoloading shotgun fitted with a 22-inch plain barrel, choked and sighted for use with rifled slugs and buckshot loads, and equipped with a ramp front sight and adjustable rifle-type rear sight. In subsequent years and production runs, additional configurations were offered, including 21-inch smoothbore barrels with rifle sights, in either cylinder or improved cylinder fixed chokes, as well as fully rifled slug barrels — many featuring cantilever scope mounts — to enhance accuracy with modern slug ammunition. By combining the 1100’s soft recoil and rapid follow-up capability with practical slug-hunting performance, the Deer Gun variant became a trusted and enduring choice for whitetail hunters.
