Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 17 is a classic, elegantly engineered pump-action 20-gauge that represents the apex of early 20th-century slide-action design. Originating from John M. Browning’s patented pump concept (filed in 1913) and refined by John D. Pedersen before production, the Model 17 was introduced commercially by Remington in the early 1920s and built to tight tolerances with a clean, trim profile intended for upland hunting and sporting use. It is a hammerless, bottom-ejecting, tube-magazine, take-down design—features that made it light, ambidextrous in handling, and easy to maintain. The action is smooth and well-balanced, with dual action bars and a positive lockup that encouraged rapid follow-ups and reliable feeding. Remington offered the Model 17 in a variety of grades and barrel lengths and produced roughly 70–75,000 examples during its production life, leaving a lasting legacy in shotgun design. Functionally, the Model 17 excels as a nimble field gun: its modest 20-gauge chambering, refined balance, and short to mid-length barrels made it a favorite for fast pointing birds and long days afield where carry weight and quick mount mattered. Its bottom ejection made it genuinely ambidextrous and kept spent hulls away from the shooter’s face—an advanced convenience for the era. Equally important is the Model 17’s outsized influence on later, highly successful designs: it was the mechanical and ergonomic template that informed the Remington Model 31, the Ithaca Model 37, and even influenced the later Browning BPS, each borrowing elements of the 17’s clean cycle, reliability, and compact handling. Today, the Model 17 is prized by collectors and upland shooters for its combination of elegant engineering and shootability; condition, originality of metal and wood, bore quality, and correct grade markings determine market value. For prospective owners, check action smoothness, forearm and magazine-tube integrity, and ensure the takedown interface and bottom-eject port are serviceable—when well cared for, a Model 17 remains a delightful, historically important 20-gauge that shoots as well as it looks.
