The Remington Model 1867 Danish Rolling-Block Rifle represents an important chapter in European military arms development and Remington’s global influence. Licensed for manufacture at the Copenhagen Arsenal, these rifles were produced in substantial numbers for Danish service and originally chambered for a rimfire cartridge that remained in use well into the smokeless powder era. With Denmark’s adoption of the 8mm M1889 Krag-Jørgensen, the Rolling Block was withdrawn from front-line infantry service in 1896, converted to centerfire, and reissued to coast and fortress artillery units. These conversions included the installation of a much longer rear ladder sight, such as the 3.25-inch backsight leaf found on this example. The left receiver flat bears the Crown and royal cypher over “M-1867,” while the upper tang is marked “Kjobenhavns Toihuus 1884,” identifying manufacture at the Copenhagen Arsenal in 1884 and firmly anchoring this rifle in Danish military history.
 
Chambered in the Danish 11.7x51R (often referred to as 50-45 Carbine), this rifle reflects the transitional period between rimfire and centerfire military cartridges. Although dimensionally similar to the U.S. .45-70, the Danish cartridge is slightly shorter and larger in diameter, making modern .45-70 use unsafe despite historical surplus mislabeling after World War II, when many were sold in the United States. Notably, after conversion, these rifles retained the ability to fire both rimfire and centerfire ammunition, a rare and fascinating feature. As part of the larger Remington Rolling Block family—produced from the 1860s into the early 20th century in numerous calibers and adopted by militaries worldwide—the Danish Model 1867 stands out as a robust, historically significant arm that illustrates the evolution of 19th-century military technology and remains highly appealing to collectors of European and Remington martial rifles.
