Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this desirable bolt-action rifle for a penny-start auction; this is the Remington 40X Target!

These rifles were produced in the mid-to-late 1960s under contract to the U.S. Army and served as the standard small-bore target rifle for competitions of that era. This example features the later heavy-weight barrel profile and bears government markings on the left receiver ring: “U.S. / .22 LONG RIFLE” above the serial number, with “REMINGTON MODEL 40-X” stamped on the left receiver side wall. It is equipped for precision work with a large globe front sight and a receiver-mounted Redfield Olympic target rear sight. The rifle rides in a heavy walnut prone-style stock with a black-anodized hand-stop rail and hand stop on the underside, sling swivels, and the original rubber buttplate stamped “WHITE-LINE.”

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 40X is a purpose-built target and varmint rifle that represents Remington’s approach to precision rimfire performance—an evolution of their 40-series actions tailored for accuracy, stable harmonics, and consistent shot-to-shot behavior. Mechanically, the 40X family is built on a rigid, well-machined action with a bolt and receiver geometry that favors repeatable headspacing and solid lockup, both of which are essential for getting the best from .22 Long Rifle ammunition. In practice, the model is aimed at serious target shooters and benchrest competitors (or owners who want a long-range rimfire trainer): long, heavy barrels, careful bedding to the stock, a crisp, adjustable trigger, and quality sights or optics combine to make sub-MOA performance achievable with the right ammunition and setup. As with any dedicated target rimfire, the 40X rewards time spent finding a rifle/ammo match, verifying crown integrity, and ensuring the action is bedded and free of stock-induced stress, because small changes in contact points can materially change point of impact at small-bore distances. Maintenance is straightforward—keep the bore clean, inspect crown and bedding, and preserve the action finish—but attention to the little details separates a merely good 40X from a truly exceptional one. This particular 40X is clearly set up as a precision bench or target instrument. It is chambered in .22 Long Rifle and finished in blue, with a 28? heavy barrel that lengthens sight radius and promotes stable harmonics (helpful for tight groups). The receiver bears a curious “U.S.” stamp above the serial number on the left side—an indicator that should prompt provenance research, as such markings can reflect government purchase or presentation history and therefore add interest and potential value (buyers should verify origin and documentation). The rifle uses quality iron sights: a Redfield International front and a Redfield “Olympic” target rear, a combination that gives a fine, repeatable sight picture for competitive shooting. The rifle rides in a smooth walnut pistol-grip benchrest stock, a configuration that promotes solid, consistent bedding and comfortable, stable hand placement for extended bench sessions. Taken together, the long heavy tube, target sights, and benchrest stock make this example ideal for precision rimfire competition, deliberate small-bore training, or collector interest—provided the buyer confirms headspace, bore/crown condition, and any provenance suggested by the “U.S.” marking to fully understand its history and performance potential.
