Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 40XBR (“40XB BR” / “40-XBR”) was introduced around 1971 as a benchrest-grade variant of the 40X/40XB line. It was initially chambered in .222 Remington, with other calibers such as .222 Remington Magnum, 6mm International, 6mmBR, and .308 Winchester being added in subsequent years. The 40XBR is a single-shot rifle (no magazine) with a stock designed for benchrest use, featuring a wider forearm to help stabilize it in rests. One distinguishing manufacturing detail is that the action serial number and model mark “Remington Model 40XBR” are electro-etched on the left side of the receiver (opposite the ejection port), rather than roll-stamped, reportedly to avoid stresses in the receiver. Typical barrel lengths for the 40XBR included around 20" (for lighter bench or varmint use) and 26" (heavier, full benchrest barrels), though there are examples with 24" and longer stainless bull barrels.
