Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 51, designed by John D. Pedersen prior to World War I, represents a significant innovation in semi-automatic pistol design. The first patent application for the gun was filed in 1915, and by 1920, seven patents were issued for various aspects of the design, with six going to Pedersen and one to his colleague Crawford C. Loomis. Over the next few years, an additional 25 patents were granted, mainly to Pedersen, though many of these innovations were never incorporated into the production models. One of the most praised aspects of the Remington Model 51 is its exceptional ergonomics. The pistol was meticulously designed with extensive testing to ensure that the grip fit comfortably in the average hand, and the grip angle was optimized for natural pointing. The result was a firearm that felt more like an extension of the hand than a separate object. Renowned firearm expert W.H.B. Smith even noted that, aside from the Luger and Walther P38, the Model 51 was one of the best-balanced and most instinctive-pointing pistols ever made.

Remington's advertising boasted that the pistol was "self-aiming," and many authorities, including R.K. Wilson, considered it the best pocket self-loading pistol ever designed. The Model 51 is equipped with three safety mechanisms: a thumb safety, a grip safety, and a magazine safety. The grip safety plays a key role in locking multiple components, including the disconnector, sear, and slide, and it also serves as a cocked weapon indicator. When the grip safety is engaged, it can also lock the slide open, and releasing it will close the slide and chamber a round if the magazine is inserted. The thumb safety, which is not found in the original patent drawings but appears on all prototypes, can only be engaged when the hammer is cocked and locks the grip safety when in the safe position.

Additionally, the magazine safety prevents the gun from firing without a magazine in place. The locking mechanism of the Remington 51 is also a standout feature. It incorporates a unique "momentum block" system, which is often classified as a form of delayed blowback. When the slide moves rearward under recoil, the breech block, which holds the firing pin and extractor, initially stays in place until the slide moves back about 0.083 inches. At this point, the breech block disengages from the receiver and becomes part of the sliding mechanism, allowing for a lighter slide and overall lighter design compared to a straight blowback-operated pistol. This system enhances Model 51's performance and makes it a reliable, easy-to-handle firearm while maintaining the durability needed for regular use. Although the Remington Model 51 was ahead of its time in many respects, it faced commercial challenges and was discontinued in 1926, with approximately 65,000 units produced. Despite this, its innovative features, especially the unique locking system and ergonomic design, have ensured its place as a highly regarded collector’s item.
