Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 522 Viper is a late-20th-century semi-automatic .22 LR designed as Remington’s polymer-built successor to the Nylon 66 line and as a bridge to later models like the Model 597. Introduced in 1993 and produced only for a short run through the mid-1990s, the Viper was notable for its extensive use of molded polymer (Rynite-type) components with steel limited to the barrel, bolt, and a few internal parts, which kept weight low and manufacturing costs down. It shipped with a 20" barrel, an integral scope-mounting rail, and featured modern conveniences for the time—a last-round hold-open, a manual safety, plus a magazine-disconnect safety—and originally used a stout steel 10-round factory magazine (Remington briefly produced 25-round magazines before the 1994 federal magazine restrictions). The Viper’s light weight, 20" barrel, and optics readiness made it attractive as a plinker and small-game rifle, but its short production life and mixed early-production magazine/feeding reputation limited its long-term market success. Practically speaking, the Viper is a useful, inexpensive shooter when you understand its quirks: early examples with the heavier steel magazines generally run more reliably than later-production rifles fitted with the less robust plastic magazines, and many owners recommend sourcing the steel factory mags or reputable aftermarket replacements to avoid feeding and spring-tension issues. Maintenance is straightforward — basic field stripping, periodic magazine spring checks/replacement, and routine bore care restore best performance — but parts/support are more limited than for longer-running Remington rimfires because the Viper’s accessory ecosystem never fully developed before the model was superseded by the Model 597. Today the 522 Viper occupies a niche as an affordable, collectible short-run Remington rimfire: it’s prized by owners for its lightweight handling and optics-ready layout, but buyers should inspect magazine condition and selector/safety function when evaluating examples on the used market.
