Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Custom Shop 40-XB Rangemaster is a high-performance bolt-action rifle built for serious competitive shooters and precision marksmen. Its foundation is the Remington 700 action, upgraded with “40-XB” refinements: heavier barrels (often 27.25-inch stainless steel for many variants), drilled and tapped receivers for scope mounts, and fully adjustable triggers that can be tuned (factory spec usually somewhere between 1½ to 3½ pounds pull) to suit the shooter's needs. The barreled action is hand-fitted and epoxy-bedded to the stock, contributing to excellent consistency and tight shot groupings. Many Rangemaster models are repeaters (i.e. magazine-fed) and accept stripper clip loading via a clip-cut in the receiver, which facilitates speedy reloads. The barrels are offered in both standard and heavy contours, and in both blue or stainless steel—later models especially favor stainless, allowing for durability, especially with extended use. The overall build quality is high: excellent metal finish options, high tolerances, and precision machining characterize the Rangemaster line. On the ergonomics and collector side, the Rangemaster is equally impressive. Stocks are usually of high-grade walnut or laminated hardwood (including thumbhole options in some models), with nice cheekpieces, recoil pads, and a satin or polished finish. The rifle is relatively heavy—many examples weigh between about 11¾ lbs with long barrels and wood stocks—which helps with stability and reduces felt recoil, aiding accuracy. The length of pull, drop-at-comb, and drop-at-heel are often well proportioned for match use. Without iron sights on most models, the intent is clearly scope use; receivers, as noted, are drilled and tapped. Accuracy tends to be excellent—many Rangemaster owners report sub-MOA performance with match or premium ammunition—consistent with Remington’s reputation for reliable, precision firearms built in the Custom Shop.
