Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Elliott’s Single-Shot “Mississippi” Derringer is a compact and historically significant pocket pistol produced by E. Remington & Sons under William Elliott’s patent between approximately 1867 and 1888. Chambered in .41 Rimfire, it was designed as a discreet, close-range personal defense arm during the post–Civil War era, when easily concealed firearms were in high demand. Its nickname, “Mississippi Derringer,” became closely associated with riverboat gamblers and travelers along the Mississippi River, who valued its small size, simplicity, and effectiveness as a last-ditch defensive weapon. With an estimated production of around 10,000 examples, the model remains a relatively scarce and desirable collectible today. Mechanically, the Elliott derringer is notable for its ingenious design in which the hammer itself functions as the breechblock, aligning directly with the barrel for firing. This clever system allowed for a strong yet compact single-shot action housed within a short, typically 2.5-inch round barrel, often rifled. Sights were minimal, consisting of a simple brass post front sight and no rear sight, reinforcing its intended role at very close distances. Finished with smooth rosewood or walnut grips, the pistol balanced practicality with modest refinement. Though limited to a single shot and short effective range, the “Mississippi” Derringer stands as an important example of early metallic-cartridge handgun development and a tangible symbol of 19th-century American concealed-carry culture.
