Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 12A is one of the key variants of Remington’s influential Model 12 pump-action rimfire family — a John D. Pedersen design introduced in 1909 that remained in production (in various forms) through 1936. Pedersen’s slide-action takedown concept combined a hammerless, solid-breech action with side ejection and a tubular magazine beneath the barrel, producing a compact, easy-to-carry small-bore rifle ideally suited to plinking, youth training, and small-game hunting. The Model 12 line was produced in several main versions (commonly referenced as 12A through 12F) and numerous subvariants; collectively, the family accounted for well over three-quarters of a million rifles, making it one of Remington’s best-selling rimfires of the pre-WWII era. Functionally, the 12A shares the Model 12’s reputation for smooth, positive cycling and sensible, shooter-friendly ergonomics. Typical calibers across the series were .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle (with special “S-grade” examples in .22 Remington Special for the WRF market), and magazine capacities were generous for the era (double-digits depending on cartridge). The takedown feature simplifies transport and maintenance, and the hammerless slide action produces a short, quick stroke that many shooters find fast and intuitive. Today, the 12A and its sibling Model 12 variants are sought after by collectors and vintage-rifle shooters for their historical importance, robust mechanical design, and the large surviving population, which nonetheless shows wide condition variability — buyers should inspect bore, action fit, and magazine springs when evaluating an example.
