Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 660 was introduced in 1968 as a thoughtful revision of the shorter-barreled Model 600 and was produced only briefly through 1971. Remington lengthened the barrel to 20", removed the ventilated rib of the 600, and refined the furniture and trim to give the 660 a more conventional sporter silhouette and a slightly heavier, steadier handling package; these modest changes improved balance and perceived shootability for many hunters while retaining the compact, handy character that made the 600 appealing as a woods-carbine. Offered in a broad selection of popular cartridges across the family (common chamberings included .222 Rem., .243 Win., 6mm Rem., .308 Win. and magnum variants in the 660 Magnum), the 660 typically used a fixed internal magazine (generally rated at four rounds, with one in the chamber possible) and a push-feed bolt action derived from Remington’s contemporary production practice. Approximately 45–50k examples were built in the short production run, and Remington later replaced the 660 with the Model 600 Mohawk and eventually folded lessons from these compact sporters into other product lines. Functionally, the Model 660 earned a reputation as a light, handy hunting rifle that excelled as a woods or guide gun — easy to carry, quick to shoulder, and well suited to short-range deer and varmint work where maneuverability mattered most. Its shorter overall length and stout 20" barrel delivered quick handling and useful accuracy for its size, while the simplified, no-rib barrel and conservative stock geometry made it straightforward to maintain in the field. That said, the brief production life, modest parts commonality with long-running Remington 700 families, and a post-production recall in the late 1970s to address a bolt-lock safety issue (which Remington remedied via a factory safety bulletin) are important ownership considerations for buyers and collectors; condition, bore quality, and documented repair history will strongly affect value and shootability. Today, the 660 occupies a niche among Remington collectors and pragmatic shooters: attractive to those who want a compact, era-correct Remington carbine with genuine field utility, but buyers should inspect headspace, magazine function, and the bolt/safety components when evaluating used examples.
