A total of only 50,536 Remington Model 660 Standard rifles were manufactured between 1968 and 1971.

The Remington Model 660 was introduced in 1968 as a thoughtful revision of the shorter-barreled Model 600 and was produced only briefly through 1971. Remington lengthened the barrel to 20", removed the ventilated rib of the 600, and refined the furniture and trim to give the 660 a more conventional sporter silhouette and a slightly heavier, steadier handling package; these modest changes improved balance and perceived shootability for many hunters while retaining the compact, handy character that made the 600 appealing as a woods-carbine.
