Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1868, the Egyptian government placed a significant order with E. Remington & Sons for No. 1 Rolling Block rifles chambered in the newly developed .43 Egyptian cartridge, a centerfire round closely related to the .43 Spanish. The initial contract, signed in London on June 30, 1869, specified approximately 30,000 rifles. However, due to financial difficulties, a portion of these rifles was diverted to France during the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871). Despite these setbacks, the remaining rifles were eventually delivered, with total deliveries often cited around 60,000 by the mid-1870s. These rifles featured the robust and reliable Remington No. 1 action, known for its strength and simplicity. The Egyptian contract rifles were typically equipped with a 35-inch barrel, iron sights, and a cleaning rod. Many surviving examples show heavy wear from service in North Africa and the Middle East, with some exhibiting Arabic inscriptions and crescent moon symbols on the stock, indicating their use by Egyptian forces. The .43 Egyptian cartridge (11.43×49mmR) was designed specifically for these rifles.

It was a rimmed, bottlenecked cartridge with a bullet diameter of approximately .448 inches (11.38 mm) and a case length of 1.937 inches (49.2mm). While it was closely related to the .43 Spanish, the .43 Egyptian was distinct in its dimensions and usage. These rifles played a significant role in Egypt's military modernization efforts and were later used by other nations, including France, during various conflicts. The Egyptian Remington Rolling Block rifles remain a testament to the enduring legacy of the Rolling Block design and its impact on the history of military firearms.
