The Remington XP-100 (eXperimental Pistol No. 100) was introduced in 1963 as a purpose-built bolt-action handgun designed to push the limits of long-range pistol performance. Built off Remington’s compact bolt designs (early prototypes tied to the Model 40X/600 family), the XP-100 was notable for spawning a cartridge of its own—the .221 Remington Fireball—created to give high velocity from the pistol’s short barrel while minimizing excessive muzzle blast and flash. Initially a single-shot, center-grip pistol with a distinctive short, rigid action and optics provision, the XP-100 helped create and popularize handgun varminting and silhouette shooting; over its multi-decade run Remington offered a variety of configurations and later Custom Shop chamberings that broadened the platform’s versatility.
