Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington XP-100R is the repeating evolution of one of the most distinctive precision handguns ever produced — the short, bolt-action “silhouette” pistol that began life in 1963 as the single-shot XP-100. The XP-100R preserved the original concept of concentrating mass close to the bore and using a rigid, rifle-derived bolt action in a pistol package, but added a small internal magazine and refinements to ergonomics and sights that made follow-up shots quicker and extended the platform’s utility for practical varmint and silhouette shooters. Mechanically, the design is a shortened, very stiff bolt action (derived from Remington centerfire practice) brazed or fitted into a rigid tubed stock with a forward-grip configuration that yields rifle-like stability in a handgun footprint. The XP-100R was offered in several rifle-caliber chamberings over its life (notably the original .221 Fireball developed for the short barrel, later factory .223 and .22-250 offerings, and even larger calibers in custom conversions), and the short, heavy-profile barrels and long sight radius (or scope mount arrangements) produce outstanding accuracy for a handgun — it is not unusual for properly set up XP-100Rs to deliver very small groups at 100–200 yards when using appropriate loads and a steady rest.

In practical use, the XP-100R occupies a narrow but rewarding niche: handgun silhouette, long-range varmint work from prone or rest, and custom precision-handgun applications where its compact footprint and rifle-grade performance are advantages. Its strengths are the rigid action, minimal reciprocating mass, and excellent inherent accuracy when headspace, crown, and barrel-to-action fit are correct. The platform’s trade-offs are operational and logistical: early single-shot models require deliberate reloading, while the repeater’s internal magazine limits capacity compared with full-size rifles; short barrels increase muzzle blast and are less efficient with some bullet designs (so load development is important); and because many XP-100s were custom-barreled or modified over the years, potential buyers should insist on a gunsmith inspection for headspace, bolt face and extractor condition, proper crown and throat condition, and evidence of the factory safety retrofit that Remington implemented on older XP-100s. For shooters who value a compact precision handgun the XP-100R is an exceptionally capable choice — but it rewards careful handloading, attention to barrel and bolt fit, and conservative maintenance; for collectors and competitors alike its unusual form, historical significance in long-range handgun shooting, and the relative scarcity of original-condition examples make well-preserved XP-100Rs desirable and often command a premium on the used market.
