Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Richard W. Hollis was a respected London-based gunmaker active from approximately 1790 to 1850. His work encompassed a range of firearms, including single-shot percussion rifles, pistols, and shotguns, primarily designed for sporting purposes. These firearms were characterized by their craftsmanship, featuring walnut stocks, engraved iron or silver fittings, and precise lock mechanisms. The barrels often bore the inscription "LONDON," indicating their origin. Hollis's firearms were produced during the early Victorian period, a time when the percussion cap ignition system was becoming standard in firearms. His work reflects the transition from flintlock to percussion systems, showcasing the technological advancements of the era.

While specific records detailing the exact number of firearms Hollis produced are limited, surviving examples demonstrate the high quality and attention to detail that defined his work. Collectors and historians value these firearms for their historical significance and craftsmanship. In summary, Richard Hollis's single-shot percussion rifles and other firearms are notable examples of early 19th-century English gunmaking, combining functionality with aesthetic elegance, and remain significant to the study of historical firearms.
