Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Rossi Overland is a side-by-side shotgun that embodies the rugged utilitarianism and nostalgic styling of classic coach guns, offered in 12, 20 gauge, and .410 bore chamberings. Manufactured by Amadeo Rossi S.A. of Brazil and imported into the U.S. until importation ceased in 1988, the Overland was produced with multiple barrel lengths—most notably a compact 20-inch “Coach Model” as well as 26- and 28-inch sporting configurations. It features external exposed hammers and double triggers, evoking 19th-century scatterguns while providing the shooter with individual control over each barrel. The break-action design employs a simple yet robust locking system, and the short-barreled version in particular offered fast handling and maneuverability that made it popular for home defense, stagecoach-style shooting reenactments, and Cowboy Action Shooting competition. Its design is mechanically straightforward, allowing for easy maintenance and dependable performance despite its modest cost. Aesthetically, the Overland presents a classic and appealing profile with hardwood stocks, splinter forearms, and steel components finished in a rich bluing. The exposed hammers and dual triggers not only reinforce its traditional character but also add a measure of functional safety, allowing users to carry the gun with hammers down until the moment of firing. Though never intended as a refined or high-grade shotgun, its solid construction, reliable operation, and period-correct design made it a favorite among enthusiasts seeking a vintage-style side-by-side without the premium cost associated with antique originals. The 26- and 28-inch barrel versions provided more conventional swing and follow-through for upland or general-purpose field use, while the 20-inch “Coach Model” excelled in confined spaces. Today, with production and importation long discontinued, the Rossi Overland retains a loyal following among collectors and shooters for its blend of old-world charm, mechanical simplicity, and practical versatility across gauges and barrel lengths.
