Ken Leo was a highly respected American firearms engraver whose work earned him Master Engraver status in FEGA, the Firearms Engravers Guild of America, one of the most important peer-reviewed organizations dedicated to preserving and advancing traditional gun engraving. He came into engraving through the classic, discipline-first path—learning tool control, metallurgy, and firearm mechanics alongside the artistic fundamentals of scroll design, borders, and background treatment—and he developed his style under the influence of established engravers rooted in traditional American and European engraving schools (the kind of training that prioritizes correct geometry, balanced layouts, and clean execution over flash). FEGA mattered to him because it represented standards and credibility: its Apprentice/Journeyman/Master ranks are earned through judged submissions by other engravers, so achieving Master status meant his work consistently met the highest level of technical precision and artistic quality. Leo became known for refined, restrained scrollwork, meticulous background work, and an almost “respectful” approach to the firearm—often signing pieces very discreetly so the gun and engraving remained the focus—qualities that are exactly why collectors value his name as genuine artistic provenance rather than simple decoration.
Brian Cosby was a highly regarded custom revolver smith best known for his specialized work converting Ruger single-action revolvers into finely tuned, custom-configured guns that bridged the gap between rugged utility and refined craftsmanship. He became deeply involved in Ruger conversions because the Ruger platform—particularly the Blackhawk, Bisley, and Old Model frames—offered exceptional strength and dimensional consistency, making them ideal foundations for caliber conversions, custom barrel work, improved sights, and action refinement. Cosby developed a reputation for thoughtful, mechanically sound conversions rather than flashy alterations, focusing on correct timing, smooth lockwork, proper cylinder fitting, and practical accuracy. His work was especially appreciated by shooters who wanted a revolver that could be used hard in the field while still reflecting the care and skill of a true craftsman. Over time, Brian Cosby’s name became closely associated with high-quality Ruger conversions done “the right way,” and today his completed revolvers are increasingly sought after because his output was limited and his approach emphasized durability, correctness, and real-world shootability—qualities that continue to resonate strongly with serious single-action revolver enthusiasts.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Blackhawk is a six-shot, single-action revolver manufactured by Sturm, Ruger & Co. It is produced in a variety of finishes, calibers, and barrel lengths. The Blackhawk has been a staple among firearm enthusiast and collectors around the world for decades and has made its legendary mark in the firearm collecting industry. The early models of the Blackhawk still operated the same way as the Colt, in that the hammer was half-cocked to load and unload and that the firearm was not safe to carry with all six chambers loaded due to the hammer resting upon the sixth chamber. In 1973, in order to eliminate accidents occurring from the hammer jarring against a round loaded in the sixth chamber, Ruger introduced the New Model Blackhawk. The New Model Blackhawk did not require the hammer to be half-cocked for loading and unloading, and it employed a transfer bar mechanism which prevented the cartridge under the hammer from being fired without the trigger being pulled. The New Blackhawk was seen as limiting firearms accidents and legal liability. Ruger then began offering a retrofit program, offering free transfer bar conversions to earlier variants of the Blackhawk.
