Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Sporter Mauser is a civilian hunting rifle manufactured after World War I by Reichswerke Erfurt (Rw.E.), the postwar successor to the former Königlich Preußische Gewehrfabrik Erfurt (“Royal/Prussian Rifle Factory, Erfurt”). Following the fall of the German monarchy in 1918, the Erfurt arsenal was reorganized and renamed Rw.E., producing a small number of rifles for the civilian market from approximately 1919 to 1921. These rifles were generally factory-assembled sporting rifles built on surplus Mauser 98/Kar98a actions, retaining the strong, reliable bolt-action system of the military originals. Unlike standard service rifles, Rw.E. Sporters were configured with hunting-style stocks and full-length tapered barrels, reflecting their intended use in civilian hunting rather than combat. Because the factory was soon dismantled under postwar restrictions, Rw.E. rifles were produced only briefly, making them a rare link between the Mauser 98’s military heritage and the early interwar civilian sporting market.
