The left side of the lower receiver is stamped with an “Arrow” proof mark and an “A/Star” proof mark with the number “10” below it. The bottom of the buttstock is stamped “N / SLAZ 65”. Both sides of the handguard are stamped “66 / SLAZ”.

Rifles built from surplus SAF Lithgow L1A1 “New Zealand Contract” parts kits are inch-pattern Commonwealth battle-rifle builds that trace their origins to Australia’s Cold War small-arms production and reflect the manufacturing standards of mid-20th-century Commonwealth military design. The L1A1 (Self-Loading Rifle) refers to Australia’s licensed inch-pattern variant of the FN FAL, produced by the Lithgow Small Arms Factory and supplied under contract to the New Zealand Defence Force during the 1960s. In Australian and New Zealand service, the L1A1 was issued as a semi-automatic rifle; unlike many metric-pattern FAL rifles adopted by other nations, Commonwealth L1A1 rifles were not select-fire in standard configuration. Many examples were later retired from service and imported into the United States as demilitarized surplus parts kits. Kits frequently contain core components such as the barrel assembly, bolt and carrier group, gas system parts, trigger components, lower receiver assembly, and original Commonwealth-pattern furniture. However, completeness and originality vary by kit and prior service history. As with most imported military parts kits, the original serialized upper receivers were destroyed prior to importation in accordance with U.S. law. Completed civilian rifles assembled from these kits therefore require a newly manufactured semi-automatic receiver, typically machined to inch-pattern L1A1 specifications to maintain compatibility with Commonwealth components.
