Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Savage 101 .22 LR with its 4¼-inch barrel is a fascinating, often underappreciated single-shot handgun that blends the appearance of a traditional single-action revolver with the mechanics of a break-open pistol, making it a uniquely charming and cleverly engineered firearm from the mid-20th century. At first glance, the 101 looks like a compact frontier-style rimfire revolver—complete with classic plow-handle grips, fixed sights, and a simulated cylinder—but closer inspection reveals that the “cylinder” is merely a solid housing, as the gun actually opens on a hinge like a miniature single-shot rifle or shotgun. To load, the user pulls back on a latch that allows the barrel and top strap to swing downward, exposing the chamber; this design creates a very simple, robust, and accurate platform that is exceptionally beginner-friendly while still appealing to seasoned shooters. The blued finish and black grip panels present a utilitarian but handsome aesthetic, and despite its lightweight construction, the pistol has a surprisingly solid feel. The 4¼-inch barrel length offers excellent balance, providing just enough sight radius for precise plinking while remaining extremely compact and easy to handle. The single-action hammer is crisp, and the trigger break—free of any rotation or cylinder drag—is inherently clean thanks to the fixed barrel and straightforward internal design.

Although only capable of firing one round before requiring a reload, the Savage 101 was created as a safe, reliable training pistol for young shooters during an era when manufacturers wanted to offer the look and feel of a “real” six-gun without the complexity or risk associated with a fully functional revolver. Today, the 101 is appreciated not only for its neat engineering and nostalgic charm but also as a collectible oddity, representing a time when manufacturers experimented boldly with hybrid concepts that balanced safety, affordability, and Western-inspired style.
