Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Savage Arms Model 24 is a long-running break-action, over/under combination gun that traces its lineage back to the Stevens Model 22-410 introduced in 1938, with Savage producing it from 1950 until approximately 2010. It features a standing-breech design, a single exposed hammer, and rear-pushing extractors (not ejectors), with 24" barrels and a total length of approximately 41". Over time, Savage made several design updates: the original side-mounted barrel selector was replaced with a hammer-mounted selector (marked with “up” and “down” arrows), and a cross-bolt hammer-block safety was added on later guns. Chamberings expanded beyond the original .22 LR over .410 combo to include many other rifle-and-shotgun pairings, such as .22 WMR, .22 Hornet, .222 Rem, .223 Rem, .30-30, .357 Magnum, and .357 Maximum with .410, 20 gauge, or 12 gauge shotgun barrels, among other configurations. Throughout its long production life, the Model 24 was offered in a wide variety of variants that differed in barrel configuration (joined or separate), stock type (plastic, walnut, or synthetic), finishes such as blue or case-hardened, and different chamberings. Still, they all retained the same simple and reliable two-barrel, break-action design.
