Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Savage Arms Fox Model B, introduced in 1940, was a side-by-side shotgun built on a simplified Anson & Deeley–type box-lock action with coil-spring hammers, a single underbolt, and a Scott-spindle top lever. Savage offered it in 12-, 16-, and 20-gauge, as well as .410-bore, and it remained in production—with various cataloged updates—until the Fox line ended in 1988. Over its production life, the Model B family underwent several documented changes: early guns (1940s-1954) featured double triggers, plain extractors, and slim forearms. In 1955, Savage introduced the B-ST with a single non-selective trigger and a beavertail forearm. By 1960, ventilated ribs were added to the B and B-ST. In 1962, the deluxe B De Luxe (B-DL) appeared in 12-gauge with a satin-chrome receiver, white-line grip cap and butt plate, checkered side panels, beavertail forearm, ventilated rib, and a gold-plated non-selective single trigger; in 1964, the deluxe model became the B-DE with automatic ejectors and continued satin-chrome finish. By 1966, the satin-chrome B-DE was discontinued, and the B-SE was introduced with ejectors, a satin black receiver, a beavertail forearm, impressed checkering, and a ventilated rib.

Throughout these cataloged changes, Savage manufactured all Fox Model Bs, with production initially moving from Utica, New York (pre-1946) to Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts (through 1960), and then to Westfield, Massachusetts (beginning around 1961). Serial numbers started to appear consistently after the Gun Control Act of 1968. Across all variants, the Fox Model B earned a reputation for durability, thanks to its robust coil-spring internal parts, underbolt lockup, and simple but rugged box-lock design.
