The Savage Arms Model 42 is a classic American combination gun that reflects the practical, no-nonsense ingenuity for which Savage became known in the mid-20th century, especially in the years surrounding World War II. Introduced in 1938 as an evolution of the earlier Model 24, the Model 42 was designed as a lightweight, utilitarian over-and-under firearm pairing a .410 bore shotgun barrel over a .22 caliber rifle barrel—most commonly .22 LR, though some were chambered in .22 WRF—making it exceptionally versatile for small-game hunting, pest control, and farm use. Built on a simple yet robust break-action design, the Model 42 featured an exposed hammer and a barrel selector integrated into the hammer itself, allowing the shooter to choose between rifle or shotgun by rotating the hammer nose, a clever and reliable system that required no complex internal mechanisms.
