Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Savage Sporter Model 23AA is a classic American bolt-action sporting rifle that was produced between 1933 and 1942 by Savage Arms in Utica, New York. Chambered for the versatile .22 Long Rifle cartridge, it was designed as a reliable, accurate, and affordable option for small-game hunters and recreational shooters. Featuring a 23-inch round tapered barrel and a polished bolt with double locking lugs, the rifle was engineered with precision in mind. Its bolt-action design employed both half-cocking on the opening stroke and full cocking on the closing stroke, aided by camming movements that reduced effort and provided strong primary extraction. Combined with its recessed bolt face, lever-style safety, and a five-round detachable magazine secured by a spring catch, the 23AA offered shooters both safety and smooth functionality. Built on the success of its predecessor, the Model 23A, the 23AA introduced improvements such as a high-speed lock mechanism, which allowed for an exceptionally fast lock time of less than two-thousandths of a second. This innovation minimized the possibility of aim shifting between the trigger pull and cartridge ignition, giving hunters greater confidence in making accurate shots. The rifle was outfitted with a bead blade front sight and an adjustable rear elevator sight, while the receiver came tapped to accept a Savage aperture sight for enhanced precision. Its one-piece American walnut stock featured a smooth, oil finish with a curved pistol grip, giving the rifle both a practical and elegant profile. Weighing approximately 6.5 pounds, the Savage 23AA was marketed as an ideal small-game rifle for pursuing squirrels, rabbits, muskrats, raccoons, and other fur-bearing animals, balancing durability, accuracy, and handling in a well-crafted package.
