The SIG Sauer Mosquito is a compact, rimfire semi-automatic pistol chambered in .22 LR that was developed as a training and recreational counterpart to SIG Sauer’s larger centerfire handguns. Manufactured under the SIG Sauer brand—historically associated with SIG Sauer—the Mosquito was designed to replicate the look and handling characteristics of duty pistols like the P226, but in a reduced 90% scale and with the low recoil and low cost of .22 LR ammunition. It operates on a simple blowback system and features a zinc-alloy slide over a polymer frame, helping to keep weight manageable while maintaining durability for range use. The pistol typically includes a 10-round detachable magazine, a threaded barrel adapter (on certain models) for suppressor use where legally permitted, and interchangeable recoil springs to help tune the pistol for different ammunition types—an important feature given the variability of rimfire loads. Its controls mirror those of many traditional SIG Sauer pistols, including a double-action/single-action trigger system, a frame-mounted decocking lever, and an ambidextrous manual safety, making it useful as a training tool for shooters familiar with SIG’s centerfire platforms.
