Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The SIG Sauer P228 is a highly respected compact 9×19 mm semi-automatic pistol that rose to prominence in the late 1980s as a shortened, ergonomically refined version of the larger SIG P226, designed to offer many of the same performance qualities in a package better suited for concealed carry, law enforcement, and military duties. Developed in 1988–1989, the P228 features a mechanically locked, short-recoil operating system with a forged aluminum alloy frame that keeps weight down (around 26 oz unloaded) while maintaining structural strength and durability, and its 3.9? barrel strikes a balance between precision and compact handling. The pistol uses a double-action/single-action (DA/SA) trigger — initially capable of a smooth, deliberate first double-action pull followed by a crisper single-action break — and incorporates SIG’s four-point safety system with a patented automatic firing-pin block and decocking lever that allows the hammer to be safely lowered without a manual safety, enhancing secure carry readiness. Standard magazines hold 13 rounds of 9 mm, and the P228 can also accept larger capacity P226 magazines (15- or even 20-round) for extended firepower, making it adaptable for different roles without altering its core design. In 1991, the P228 was adopted by the U.S. Armed Forces as the M11 Compact Combat Pistol, where it earned a reputation for reliability and rugged service life under demanding conditions, and it has also seen wide use among law enforcement units worldwide thanks to its balanced ergonomics, intuitive controls, and proven feeding geometry. Although civilian sales were limited initially and later supplemented by the P228R variant, which features an accessory rail and updated styling, the original P228 remains appreciated by shooters for its solid mechanical accuracy, controllability in rapid fire, and straightforward, time-tested design that helped define compact service pistols for decades.
