Introduced in 1992, the Sig Sauer P229 was developed as a compact alternative to the full-sized P226 and was designed to meet the growing demand for a more powerful, concealable, service pistol. Unlike its predecessor, the P228, which featured a stamped-steel slide, the P229 was engineered to handle higher-pressure cartridges such as .357 Sig and .40 S&W. This was achieved by incorporating a CNC-milled stainless steel slide, which upgrades and enhances the overall durability and allows the pistol to withstand the increased pressures associated with these calibers. The P229's versatility is evident in its ability to chamber multiple calibers, including 9mm, .40 S&W, .357 Sig, and .22 LR. Notably, the P229 was the first production handgun capable of chambering the .357 Sig cartridge, a round developed to replicate the performance of the .357 Magnum in a semi-automatic pistol.
