SIG Sauer imported a limited number of the legendary Swiss Arms SG 553 pistols into the U.S. market. The Swiss-made SG 553 pistol is a compact, high-performance firearm engineered around the battle-proven SG 551/552-series long-stroke gas piston system—a platform widely respected for its reliability and performance in extreme conditions. Initially developed for military and law enforcement applications, the SG 553 incorporates a two-position adjustable gas regulator, allowing operators to optimize performance for either suppressed or unsuppressed firing. This adjustment not only enhances cycling reliability but also helps reduce fouling and wear on internal components. According to Jeff Creamer, Executive Director and General Merchandise Manager for SIG Sauer, “This was a unique opportunity and the only time SIG Sauer has been able to offer the SG 553 to the commercial market in the United States,”.

Chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, the SG 553 was made available in a variety of configurations to suit different operational preferences. Options included models with the legendary Swiss rotary diopter rear sight, permanently welded to the receiver for unmatched durability and consistent zero, and other models featuring a full-length picatinny top rail, ideal for mounting optics, lasers, and other mission-critical accessories. Rail-equipped models come standard with flip-up iron sights, providing flexibility for users who prefer backup sighting systems. All SG 553 models are finished with a durable nitride coating, offering superior resistance to corrosion, abrasion, and environmental exposure. These firearms also feature a Swiss-style polymer handguard designed for excellent thermal performance and ergonomic handling, even during prolonged firing sessions. A three-prong flash hider is standard, effectively reducing muzzle flash and signature—an advantage in low-light or tactical settings.
The SG 553 pistol is built with a cold-hammer forged 9-inch barrel, delivering both exceptional accuracy and extended barrel life. The SG 553 pistol measures 20.2 inches in overall length. It weighs approximately 5.9 pounds (2.68 kg) unloaded, making it exceptionally maneuverable in confined spaces or dynamic environments. Only a limited number of SG 553 pistols were available to the U.S. civilian market, making these rare and highly collectible firearms.
