Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 46 is a heavy, target-oriented .22 Long Rifle semi-automatic produced as a budget-minded counterpart to the legendary Model 41—manufactured in small numbers from the late 1950s into the mid-1960s and aimed at shooters who wanted match-style ergonomics and accuracy without the premium finish and price of the 41. Mechanically it borrows the Model 41’s basic single-action, fixed-barrel blowback layout but uses simpler machining lines and less elaborate bluing to keep costs down while retaining a substantial, slab-sided heavy barrel that gives exceptional rigidity and a long sight radius for a rimfire pistol; standard factory appointments included an adjustable target rear sight, a ramped target front, a 10-round single-stack magazine and nylon (or Bakelite) grips suited to steady two-hand holds. Barrel offerings were uncommon and limited—factory records show most Model 46s left the factory with a 5" barrel, while very rare 5½" (about 500 produced) and a small number of 7" barreled examples exist, which makes the 5.5" and 7" trims particularly desirable to collectors. In practice the Model 46 is praised for its target-grade trigger feel (light, crisp on a well-tuned example), solid steel construction that soaks up recoil and steadying weight for precision strings, and a forgiving feed system that likes good quality .22 LR ammunition—though like any vintage rimfire trainer it benefits from careful maintenance and correct magazine/spring condition to remain reliable. Today the Model 46 occupies a niche between collectible classic and eminently usable target pistol: unfussy in finish compared with its Model 41 sibling but capable of very impressive accuracy when sighted and maintained properly, and high-condition examples—especially the scarce long-barrel variants—command collector premiums on the secondary market.

We gladly offer a 3 day unfired inspection policy from the time that the firearm is delivered to your FFL. Refunds are available for all qualifying orders.
