The Smith & Wesson Model 1006 is a robust, full-size semi-automatic pistol that stands as a hallmark of early .40 S&W service and competition handgun design, originally introduced in 1990 as one of Smith & Wesson’s first offerings chambered for the newly adopted law-enforcement cartridge developed to bridge the gap between 9 mm and .45 ACP. Built on S&W’s large, forged steel frame with a full-length slide and barrel (often around 5"), the 1006 was engineered for durability, accuracy, and controllability, and its weight — roughly 38–39 oz unloaded — helped tame the stout recoil impulses of .40 S&W ammunition in both rapid fire and long strings at the range. The action is a traditional double-action/single-action (DA/SA) design with a decocking lever on the slide that safely lowers the hammer from a cocked position, and an automatic firing-pin block safety adds another layer of secure handling, features that aligned well with the safety and readiness expectations of police departments in the 1990s. Feeding from 11-round double-stack magazines standard (with some extended options available), the 1006 balanced capacity with ergonomics that suited large-handed shooters, and its iron sights — a serrated ramp front and adjustable rear — provided a clear, positive sight picture for both defensive and competitive use.
