Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 27 is a double/single-action revolver chambered for .357 Magnum/.38 Special. Reintroduced in December 1948, it was built on the square-butt N-frame with five-screws. This postwar model incorporates a new hammer block, and postwar improvements carried with an “S” serial prefix. It features a six-shot fluted cylinder, originally counterbored with a nominal length of 1.62 inches, later reduced to 1.57 inches when counterboring was discontinued in 1982. Barrels were pinned and initially offered in 3 1/2- and 5-inch lengths, both of which were discontinued in 1979. Later production included 4-, 6-, 6 1/2-, and 8 3/8-inch options. All versions carried a finely checkered top strap and a shrouded extractor rod, with sight arrangements varying by length: the 4-inch barrel typically used a red-ramp front sight paired with a white-outline micrometer-click rear, while the 6- and 8 3/8-inch barrels usually featured a 1/8-inch patridge front sight and a plain adjustable rear blade. Early postwar production was offered with six-groove serrations on the backstrap and forestrap, which were later replaced with ten-groove. Standard grips were walnut Magna-style with S&W medallions and the early diamond-pattern escutcheon, eventually replaced by oversize Target stocks.

Trigger and hammer configurations evolved over time: the .265-inch grooved service trigger and .400-inch semi-target hammer were standard from 1948 to 1975, followed by the .500-inch grooved target trigger and .500-inch target hammer from 1975 to 1980, and finally the .400-inch grooved trigger used from 1981 to 1994. Production ran from 1948 to 1994, with additional special-production runs from 1997 to 2000, firmly establishing the Model 27 as the postwar continuation of Smith & Wesson’s prestigious Registered Magnum lineage. Today, the Model 27 remains one of the classic N-frame revolvers widely collectible among collectors and shooters alike.
