Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 34, commonly known as the “.22/32 Kit Gun,” is a classic small-frame rimfire revolver introduced in the early 1950s and built on the J-frame. Designed as a lightweight, compact companion for outdoorsmen, it was intended to be easily carried in a tackle box, backpack, or hunting kit, offering reliable small-game and trail utility. Chambered in .22 Long Rifle with a six-shot cylinder, the Model 34 typically featured a pinned barrel, adjustable rear sight, and blued carbon-steel finish, combining practical accuracy with refined craftsmanship. Produced in various configurations from 1953 until the late 1970s, the Model 34 is well regarded today for its balance, smooth double-action trigger, and enduring appeal among collectors and shooters who appreciate traditional Smith & Wesson rimfire revolvers.

The Smith & Wesson Model 51, officially known as the .22/32 Kit Gun – Model of 1960, is a small-frame, double-action rimfire revolver built on S&W’s J-frame and chambered in .22 Long Rifle. Introduced in 1960 as the direct successor to the earlier pre-model Kit Guns, the Model 51 carried forward the concept of a lightweight, compact revolver intended for outdoorsmen, hikers, and trappers as a handy “kit” companion. It typically featured a pinned barrel (most commonly 4 inches, though other lengths exist), adjustable sights, and the classic blued carbon-steel finish that defined Smith & Wesson’s mid-20th-century revolvers. Produced until 1974, when it was replaced by the stainless-steel Model 63, the Model 51 is well regarded for its excellent balance, smooth action, and practical accuracy, and today it remains a desirable collectible for enthusiasts of classic Smith & Wesson rimfire revolvers.
