Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 34-1 is a classic “Kit Gun” variant that translates the company’s small-frame revolver pedigree into a compact, utilitarian .22 MRF package — a six-shot, double-action/single-action revolver built on the slightly larger J-frame starting in 1960 (the Model 34 name itself dates to 1958, but the 34-1 denotes the J-frame redesign). Offered most commonly with either a short (2") snub or a 4" target-length pinned barrel, the 34-1 was intended as an all-around “kit” pistol for campers, anglers, plinkers and small-game hunters: light and easy to carry yet accurate enough for practical work thanks to its adjustable rear sight and ramped front. The revolver’s construction is straightforward — steel frame and cylinder with blued or nickel finishes typical of the period, a six-round, .22 MRF cylinder, and a 1.5-pound class weight and compact overall dimensions that make it pleasant on the range and forgiving to shoot. Over the decades the Model 34-1 earned a reputation for dependable service and an easy-to-maintain design: barrels on many early examples were pinned and recessed into the frame (a detail collectors note when assessing originality), its target sights are user-friendly for a small revolver, and spare parts and sight assemblies remain reasonably available thanks to S&W’s long production run and continuing J-frame compatibility. Today the 34-1 sits comfortably between practical shooter and collectible: well-preserved examples command modest sums on the used market, they remain popular with those who want a compact, accurate .22 revolver, and the model’s long production life (through the late 20th century in various forms) means there are many surviving examples in a wide range of finishes and barrel configurations.
