Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1950, at approximately serial number S75000, the .357 Magnum was modernized with the incorporation of the short-throw hammer, a design improvement intended to enhance both speed and safety of operation. The Pre-27 model was offered in either a traditional blued finish or, more rarely, in nickel, giving buyers a choice of appearance. It featured standard target sights and checkered walnut grips with S&W medallions, providing a combination of aesthetics and functional grip. The topstraps were finely checkered to match the barrel rib, while the fore- and backstraps were grooved, reflecting the attention to detail found in S&W’s target revolvers. Around 1954, target-style stocks became available, further improving the revolver’s suitability for precision shooting. Barrels were offered in a range of lengths, including 3 1/2", 5", 6", 6 1/2", and 8 3/8", all mounted on the five-screw N-frame, giving shooters flexibility in balance and handling.

The “S” prefix serial numbers continued until 1969, after which the “N” prefix was introduced to reflect ongoing production updates. In 1956, near serial number S172000, the upper side plate screw was eliminated, a subtle but important change in the revolver’s construction. Finally, in 1957, the .357 Magnum was officially designated the Model 27, marking the beginning of its recognized place in Smith & Wesson’s lineup of premium target revolvers.
