Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 37 is a double/single-action revolver chambered in .38 Special, built on the alloy J-frame with early five-screw construction. It was offered with 2-inch or 3-inch pinned barrels in round-butt or square-butt configurations, finished in blued or nickel. Early production featured a five-shot fluted alloy cylinder with a 1/10-inch serrated ramp front sight and square-notch rear sight, paired with checkered walnut grips with S&W medallions and diamond-shaped screw escutcheons. Early examples included a .240-inch service hammer matched with a .240-inch serrated trigger, while later production standardized a .312-inch smooth combat trigger, retaining the original service hammer. Initial frames were five-screw with round trigger guards and shorter grips, quickly replaced by four-screw alloy frames with longer trigger guards and grips; both used a clothespin-style cylinder stop spring before later adopting a coil-type design. Some of the earliest production examples also included a small lock screw on the upper sideplate to secure the larger screw. Airweight is marked on the barrel and weighs approximately 12.5 ounces with a 2-inch barrel and steel cylinder. Notably, the Model 37 remains the only S&W revolver without an internal lock system. Production spanned from 1951 to 2005, representing Smith & Wesson’s commitment to lightweight, compact revolvers for personal defense and concealed carry.
