Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The .38 Smith & Wesson Model Military & Police Model of 1905 is a significant milestone in the evolution of Smith & Wesson's .38 Hand Ejector revolvers, marking the third iteration in a series that would go on to have a lasting impact on law enforcement and civilian firearm markets. Built on the robust K-frame, the Model 1905 is a six-shot revolver chambered for the .38 Special cartridge, offering both versatility and reliability. Throughout its production, the Model 1905 was offered in various configurations, including different grip types (round or square butt), grip materials (checkered walnut or hard rubber), and finishes (blue, nickel, or rare chrome), giving it a broad appeal among different users. Barrel lengths ranged from compact 2-inch versions to longer 6.5-inch barrels, accommodating a range of needs from personal defense to service use. The Model 1905 also featured a "five screw" frame, a design that contributed to its sturdiness, with screws securing the side plate and trigger guard. Over the course of its production, the Model 1905 underwent four minor design changes, with the first two overlapping in manufacture. Notably, at around serial number 316,648, Smith & Wesson began heat-treating the cylinders, further improving durability and strength. Produced in large numbers, the Model 1905 saw over 1 million units made in its various iterations, including the early versions like the Military & Police Model of 1905 (10,800 units made in 1905-1906), and later versions up to the 4th change model (758,296 units made from 1915 to 1942). The Model 1905's design and functionality laid the groundwork for subsequent models, including the famous Model 10, making it a cornerstone in the history of revolver development.
