The Smith & Wesson .38 Safety Hammerless, 3rd Model, is a double-action-only revolver chambered in .38 S&W, featuring a backstrap safety. It has a 5-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.21" and was offered with barrel lengths of 3 1/4", 4", 5", or 6", each with a top rib. The revolver is fitted with checkered hard rubber grips bearing the S&W monogram and was available in either blue or nickel finish, utilizing a top-break action. Notable design updates include a barrel catch that now extends over the frame with a small cutout and the addition of a cross pin in the trigger guard to prevent forward movement of the trigger. The sideplate is secured by two screws on the left side. The front sight is a round blade pinned into the barrel rib, while the rear sight is a notch cut into a raised portion of the barrel latch. The 3rd Model was produced from 1890 to 1898, with serial numbers ranging from 42,484 to 116,002, totaling approximately 73,500 units.
