The Smith & Wesson Model 3914 DAO is a compact 9mm handgun that was part of the well-known third generation of semi-automatic pistols produced by Smith & Wesson during the late 20th century. Derived from the earlier Smith & Wesson Model 3913, the 3914 DAO was designed primarily for concealed carry, law-enforcement backup use, and personal defense, offering the reliability of the established 39-series platform in a configuration that emphasized simplicity and safety. Chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum, the pistol operates using a short-recoil, locked-breech system and features a double-action-only (DAO) trigger mechanism, meaning that every trigger pull both cocks and releases the hammer. This system eliminates the transition between double-action and single-action trigger pulls found on traditional DA/SA pistols, providing a consistent trigger pull for every shot and removing the need for a manual safety lever. 
 
The 3914 DAO typically features an aluminum alloy frame paired with a steel slide finished in a durable matte blue or black coating, resulting in a lightweight yet sturdy handgun suitable for everyday carry. The pistol is equipped with a single-stack detachable magazine holding eight rounds of 9mm ammunition, which contributes to its slim grip profile and makes it easier to conceal under clothing. With a barrel length of approximately 3.5 inches and a compact overall size, the Model 3914 offers a good balance between shootability and portability. Fixed low-profile sights and checkered grip panels help enhance handling while maintaining a streamlined design that reduces the likelihood of snagging during a draw.
