Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 40, also known as the Centennial, is one of the most distinctive and historically significant J-Frame revolvers S&W ever produced. Introduced in 1952 to commemorate the company’s 100th anniversary, it featured a completely enclosed hammer for snag-free carry and, most uniquely, an integrated grip safety—a feature not found on other S&W revolvers of the era. Chambered in .38 Special and built on the classic steel J-Frame, the Model 40 was specifically designed for discreet personal protection, becoming a popular choice among plainclothes officers and concealed carriers throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Produced in relatively limited numbers until its discontinuation in the 1970s, the Model 40’s unique safety mechanism, Centennial origins, and early concealed-carry purpose make it highly appealing to collectors today. Well-preserved examples—especially those retaining original grips, finish, and factory markings—represent an important chapter in Smith & Wesson’s evolution of defensive handguns.
