Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 41 is a distinguished semi-automatic pistol designed specifically for competitive target shooting. Developed after World War II, the Model 41 was the result of years of refinement and testing, making it one of the most well-regarded pistols for precision shooting in its class. One of the key design features of the Model 41 is its 105-degree grip angle, which was intentionally matched to the angle of the Colt M1911 to provide a consistent grip and better ergonomics for shooters, ensuring that the pistol would feel familiar and comfortable, especially for those accustomed to the M1911's grip. Development of the Model 41 began in July 1947, when two prototypes—designated X-41 and X-42—were produced and tested. Over the next decade, these prototypes underwent significant improvements, incorporating feedback from competitive shooters and engineers alike. By 1957, Smith & Wesson officially released the Model 41 to the public, producing an initial run of 679 units. The pistol’s reception was positive, and by the end of 1958, Smith & Wesson had manufactured over 9,800 units, making the Model 41 one of the company's premier target pistols. The Model 41 was available in a variety of configurations, with barrel lengths ranging from a standard 7-inch version to a lighter 5-inch barrel introduced in 1958, aimed at those who required a more portable or field-friendly variant of the pistol. The Model 41-1, which debuted in 1960, was specifically designed for International rapid-fire competition, a discipline requiring a pistol that could handle rapid, controlled shooting. To accommodate the needs of this specific competition, the Model 41-1 was chambered in .22 Short, a lower-powered cartridge that allowed for faster, more consistent cycling of the action. To function reliably with the lower-powered ammunition, the Model 41-1 featured a light aluminum slide, and only 1,000 units were produced to meet this niche demand. Throughout its production, the Smith & Wesson Model 41 was known for its superb accuracy, reliable function, and smooth handling. Its precision construction made it a favorite among target shooters, particularly in Bullseye and International rapid-fire competitions. The pistol’s reputation for quality and its specific targeting of the competitive shooting market helped to cement its place as a premier choice for serious enthusiasts, and it remains a sought-after collector's item today.
