Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson .44 Double-Action Frontier is a double-action revolver built on a top-break frame and chambered in .44-40 Winchester. It features a 6-shot fluted cylinder measuring 1 9/16 inches in length to accommodate the longer cartridge. Standard barrels were generally available in 4-, 5-, 6-, or 6 1/2-inch lengths, with early examples bearing two-line barrel markings including patent dates, while later production, around 1900, switched to a single-line barrel address without patent dates. Some later cylinders were also marked “44 Winchester Ctg.”. The revolver came standard with walnut or black hard rubber grips embossed with the S&W monogram. Serial numbers were typically found on the frame, and top-break construction allowed for easy loading and unloading. Sights were offered in service or target configurations, meeting the needs of both law enforcement and civilian shooters. The frame and cylinder were robustly constructed to handle the pressures of the .44-40 cartridge, and the top-break design allowed for rapid ejection of spent cases.

Finish options varied, with blued and nickel-plated examples most common, while other finishes are occasionally observed. The revolver was produced from 1886 to 1913, with a total production of 15,340 units and serial numbers ranging from 1 to 15,340. Later production examples may show subtle differences in barrel markings and cylinder inscriptions, reflecting the evolution of the model over its production life. The Smith & Wesson Frontier remains a sought-after collector’s piece for its combination of double-action convenience, versatile barrel lengths, and late 19th-century American craftsmanship.
