Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this RARE and DESIRABLE semi-automatic pistol for a penny-start auction; this is the Smith & Wesson Model 459, also known as the 2nd Generation 9mm!
The Smith & Wesson Model 459 is available in a variation featuring a dull brushed finish and high-impact nylon grips. These specific models have been associated with multiple purposes, including being manufactured for the FBI, potentially produced for the U.S. military's XM9 contract, or as part of an experimental finish that was later rejected by Smith & Wesson. These variations, often referred to as being made with special features required by specific government agencies, are reported to fall within the serial number range A881000 to A881950. Given their limited production and unclear history, these models are considered rare, and any examples with verified documentation linking them to the FBI or the XM9 contract could command a premium due to their historical significance. To date, however, no definitive documentation has emerged to confirm these guns as part of the XM9 contract, meaning their full provenance remains uncertain. Regardless, the rarity of this variation makes it a sought-after collectible in the Smith & Wesson market.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson 459 is the second generation of the Smith & Wesson 59. The latter is a double-stacked magazine version of the Smith & Wesson 39. The main external difference between the 459 and the 59 is that the former has adjustable rear sights, while the latter doesn't. However, fixed sights could be ordered for the 459 as well. Another external difference is that the slide stop pivot pin appears behind the frame bulge on the 459 and ahead of it on the 59, where the bulge is further back. The 459 was in production for eight years and was replaced by a later generation of S&W 9mm automatic handguns, the 5900 series. The S&W 459 has an all-blued steel counterpart called the S&W 559 and a stainless steel version known as the Smith & Wesson 659. The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) highly regarded the pistol for many years, and it was used by many of the agents who carried it. A handful continued to carry it until the FBI transitioned to the .40 S&W Glock 22 in 1997 when they were ordered to switch.
