The Smith & Wesson Model 52-2 is a highly specialized semi-automatic pistol developed specifically for precision bullseye competition, representing one of the few successful attempts to chamber a semi-auto handgun in .38 Special. Designed to fire flush-seated wadcutter ammunition, the pistol prioritizes accuracy and consistency over capacity, with its five-round magazine dictated by the rimmed cartridge design. Featuring a 5-inch barrel and all-steel construction, the Model 52-2 delivers exceptional balance and minimal recoil, making it ideally suited for slow-fire target shooting where precision is paramount.
 
An evolution of the earlier 52 and 52-1 variants, the 52-2 introduced a coil-spring extractor that improved reliability while maintaining the platform’s renowned accuracy. Its single-action trigger is notably crisp, complementing the adjustable rear sight and serrated front blade for fine-tuned shot placement. Checkered walnut grips further enhance control and ergonomics, contributing to its strong reputation among competitive shooters. Although production required extensive hand fitting—resulting in limited output and higher cost—the Model 52-2 became a dominant force in American bullseye shooting before eventually being discontinued in 1993, solidifying its legacy as one of the finest target pistols ever produced.
