The Smith & Wesson Model 57 is a large-frame, double-action revolver that was first introduced in April 1964, chambered for the powerful .41 Magnum cartridge. Designed primarily for law enforcement, the Model 57 was intended to offer a higher level of stopping power than traditional service revolvers, such as the .38 Special, but its considerable size and recoil made it less ideal for everyday police work. Instead, the Model 57 found greater favor among civilian target shooters and hunters, particularly those seeking a powerful handgun for hunting large game or for use in shooting sports. Built on Smith & Wesson's robust "N" frame, the Model 57 featured a six-round cylinder and was offered in several barrel lengths, including 4", 6", 6-1/2", and the longer 8-3/8".
