Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 60 made history in 1965 as the first production revolver constructed from stainless steel. Built on the round-butt J-frame, this five-shot, double-action revolver was chambered in .38 S&W Special. Early examples featured three screws, a fluted cylinder measuring 1.53", a 2" pinned barrel, satin stainless finish, checkered walnut Magna-style grips with medallions and diamond escutcheons, a 1/10" serrated ramp front sight with square-notch rear, and a .240" service hammer and trigger—later updated to a .312" smooth combat trigger. The first group of 39 revolvers fell within serials 401754–401792, with full production beginning in the 409802–410698 range until 1969, when the “R” prefix was introduced. Weight was 19 ounces with the 2" barrel. Several notable variations followed. In 1989, Smith & Wesson introduced the “LadySmith,” offered with a 2" standard or 3" heavy barrel, frosted stainless finish, ergonomically shaped grips (wood combat on the 3"), and “LadySmith” engraved on the frame.

Early examples shipped in a burgundy case, later in a soft Bob Allen case, with the LDY0001 serial prefix. In 1990, a 3" full-lug version was produced with a pinned black ramp front sight, black adjustable rear sight, Uncle Mike’s Santoprene grips, .375" semi-target hammer, and .347" serrated trigger. Rated for +P ammunition and weighing 24.5 ounces, it entered standard production in 1992 and ran until 1999. By 1996, the Model 60 was chambered in .357 Magnum on the slightly larger “J Magnum” frame. Variants included the Model 60-10 with a 3" full underlug barrel and adjustable sights, and the Model 60-9 with a 2 1/8" barrel and fixed sights. Updates included a longer 1.6" fluted cylinder, floating firing pin, flat-faced hammer, redesigned cylinder stop lug, and MIM thumbpiece.

Options included solid or hollow MIM triggers and Uncle Mike’s combat grips. A LadySmith Magnum version with smooth wood grips was also offered. In 1997, S&W reintroduced the Model 60 chambered in .38 Special only, underscoring the model’s enduring popularity. Produced from 1965 to the present, the Model 60 was offered in numerous variations, making it one of the most iconic small-frame revolvers, valued for its concealability, strength, and performance.
