Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 610 is a six-shot, double-action revolver designed to chamber the 10mm Auto cartridge, a rimless pistol cartridge. Built on the large N-frame, which is similar to the frames used in the Model 29 (.44 Magnum) and Model 27/28 (.357 Magnum), the Model 610 is equipped to handle the powerful 10mm Auto round. Since the 10mm Auto is a rimless cartridge, the revolver utilizes moon clips to hold the cartridges in place for loading and extracting spent cases. Additionally, the Model 610 is versatile enough to fire the shorter .40 S&W cartridge, a less powerful variant of the 10mm Auto, thanks to their identical diameter. The Model 610 was introduced in 1990, but due to a decline in the popularity of the 10mm round, Smith & Wesson discontinued the model in 1992 after low sales.

The Model 610 made a comeback in 1998, after a six-year hiatus, with modifications aimed at competitive shooters. The reintroduced version featured a redesigned internal firing pin (moving it from the hammer to the frame) and an added internal safety lock, which was in response to feedback from members of the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC). While originally intended for IPSC competitions, the Model 610 became more popular in International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) matches. In 2019, Smith & Wesson once again reintroduced the Model 610, offering both 4-inch and 6-inch barrel lengths, maintaining the six-round capacity, and incorporating modern features such as a safety-lock system, black synthetic finger groove grips, and adjustable sights. The 2019 versions of the Model 610 remain capable of firing both 10mm and .40 S&W cartridges, using the included moon clips.
